Ghost Chasers was initially set up to investigate a location in Paull, near Hull, to see whether indeed it was haunted in aid of BBC Children In Need Appeal 2004. Our team was then 12 and there have been a few changes since then as team members have moved on, and others have joined our team.
Founder and parapsychologist, Michael Smith and co-founder Claire Walker, developed Ghost Chasers to the standard it is today, where they offered members of the public to participate in a paranormal investigation event, with no mediums and no preconceptions, the first being at the Galleries Of Justice in 2005, and the team has gone from strength to strength since then.
Michael and Claire started off with a location in Paull and then small locations such as pubs, and got very interesting results. However, once you've seen one pub, you've seen them all. Claire Walker explains,"It became very repetitive after our third pub, a cellar is a cellar after all, and a bar a bar, so we decided to develop our skills, and in order to do so we needed bigger locations. If we restricted ourselves to Hull, we would still, even now, be investigating pubs, so Mike and I decided to become a national investigating team rather than a local one, and we now have a firm reputation established, with many locations, and companies contacting us."
Michael continues,"Although we are a national investigating team, we still conduct local investigations, of which we conducted our first LIVE investigation at BBC Hull on Halloween 2006, which has heightened our profile no-end, and in the up-coming months we will be conducting three local investigations in and around Hull."
The team has seen many changes since their first investigation in 2004, and it is still evolving today. Why is this? "People's interests and situations change," explains Claire, "as mine continues to do. The team we have in place are from far and wide, and from many different backgrounds, so as people leave and move on we take more members on board who bring a fresh perspective to the existing team and bring with them a whole new set of ideas."
So just what is a paranormal investigation? Clare Smith explains. "A paranormal investigation is an investigation into the unknown. We conduct vigils, which is a scientific phrase for asking any spirits in the atmosphere to come forward to try and communicate with us by tapping and rapping. Sometimes we get results, sometimes we don't, it all depends on the night. We record the investigation by using night vision cameras which can catch EVP's or light anomalies, and we also conduct a number of experiments." Mike continues, "Normally if we don't hear anything, and we look back at the footage we've filmed, we can have something of interest, be it a light anomaly or an electronic voice phenomena, commonly known as EVP. We also set up a trigger object experiment in which we hope any spirits may move, and we set up a locked off camera to record this."
The team use a variety of equipment, including EMF (Elecrto Motive Force) meters, which the team use to detect natural EMF and electric cables, so that during their investigation should the meters pick something up which they didn't before, this would be the time to start taking photographs with a digital camera and a single lens camera, to try and catch any orbs, or light anomalies. Also, to detect movement, the team utilise motion detectors, which have a infrared beam, which if broken makes a loud sound, and a VIBRAlert, which can pick up a in dropping on the floor it is that sensitive!
In order to record any Electronic Voice Phenomena, or EVP, the team use a wide range of equipment, from a small hand held cassette recorder to digital dictaphones, and then these results are analysed through Adobe Audition, and they have some very good examples which you can find under Experience EVP.
